Nurturing the Development of Young Children with Developmental Disabilities

Birth to Age 5

The consensus, based upon the best available evidence, is that early interventions for children with developmental disabilities can have profound impact on improving quality of life. In this session Dr. Tom Pomeranz will discuss a variety of strategies that can easily be utilized by parents, foster parents and surrogate families to promote and facilitate the development of their young child with developmental disabilities.

Outside of the realm of typically utilized interventions, Tom will discuss the importance of such interventions as - thinking out loud, non- contingent touching, floor play, selecting toys that maximize learning, supporting participation in all aspects of their lives, proactively responding to behavioral issues and many others. Tom will also explain the importance of compensating for the fact that many children with developmental disabilities “don’t push back” and shape the behavior of their parents to support their independence.

Participants will be encouraged to come to the session with concerns and questions regarding their child’s development and challenges that they may be experiencing. These questions will serve as a helpful foundation to provide families with a greater degree of confidence that they are providing the supports and nurturance needed by their child.

This session is intended for parents and parent surrogates of children with developmental disabilities ages birth to five years of age.

WHAT ATTENDEES ARE SAYING

I went to your training last night in Omaha, and I wanted to thank you for your dynamic, forward thinking information. I am a parent of a child with a disability and I also work at PTI-Nebraska. PTI provides training and information to families with children with disabilities and special health care needs. I learned so much and am so excited, that I would like to continue sharing your message with our families and incorporate some of your information into a family training session we could offer on a regular basis. Again, I thank you for your kind heart and information. Parent/Early Childhood Specialist, Omaha, Nebraska
