Supported Routines

Best Practice Strategies for a Fulfilling Life

The maxim that “without a presence, there is no future” serves as the foundation for this session. In this lively and informative session, Tom brings home the point that “habilitation is not a goal – it is a result”. People grow, develop and become more independent as a result of participating in meaningful life activities. Tom details how supports should be delivered to allow individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and significant cognitive, physical and/or conduct issues to participate in all aspects of their life.

The session provides participants with insight as to how our perceptions and expectations serve as barriers in providing support. The four supported routine outcomes (facilitating connections, maximizing independence, enhancing self-worth, and producing self-determination) are detailed and their life enhancing effects are reviewed.

WHAT ATTENDEES ARE SAYING

The examples of how to use the techniques with different individuals was amazing! The whole course was fantastic! Life Quest, Mitchell, SD

We have received a great deal of praise for bringing you to our agency and have found your trainings have offered us a great way to continually return to the very foundations of the support GMS wants to give the individuals who reside with us. Since your training, we have seen immediate change doors are knocked upon, people are pulling out aprons to make their own breakfast in the morning, and sitting down to make phone calls and write emails to physicians and case workers far more than ever before. It is just a start, but I am sure we will be in touch soon as we continue on our post training path! Group Main Support, Westbrook, ME

Finally, someone who truly understands what happens and provides solutions! Wyoming Life Resource Center Made me motivated to change! He is very energetic and passionate - it rubs off on the audience. ARC of Rockland, Congers, NY

Even when a person thinks an individual can't do something - there are still ways of getting them to participate and activities that I had not thought about that they should be doing (i.e., wheelchair washing). Beatrice Developmental Center, Beatrice, NE

I believe without this training I would not have been truly qualified to be direct support staff. Enable, Bismarck, ND There are too many ideas and techniques to list! His whole approach to supporting routines is very eye-opening and inspiring. I intend to implement all I've learned from this session! Topeka ARC, Topeka, KS

How I wish I could transplant Tom to our school system as a trainer-what a powerful insight. “It is more about us than them!” University of Tennessee Center on Disability and Employment, Knoxville, TN

The speaker was very informative powerfully presented. Made me see things in ways I haven’t before and look at ways I can improve the blind spots in my relationships with the people I support. The ARC of Baltimore, Baltimore, MD

With all of my years of experience, I felt like I was in class for the first time. Spectrum Support, Martin, TN
