| COURSE OFFERINGS Achieving the Right of Adult Status |
In this informative and provocative session, Dr. Pomeranz decisively dispels the myth “they are children in adult bodies.” The implications of developmental age, mental age and mind of a three year old will be thoroughly explored. Attendees will be introduced to a variety of age-appropriate training and leisure materials that are desired by individuals with developmental disabilities. The argument that an age-appropriate lifestyle and opportunity for choice only apply to individuals with mild cognitive limitations or those who are verbal will be debunked. Emphasis will be placed on the maxim “It’s not what people have, it’s what they don’t.” Through the sharing of tales, attendees will increase their sensitivity to adults with developmental disabilities utilizing age-appropriate media and behaviors. Deviancy-competency hypothesis will be discussed as to its importance in encouraging adults with developmental disabilities to select age-appropriate items. |
