Why Don't We See It?

Maximizing Situational Awareness to Improve Quality of Life

In this enlightening session, Dr. Tom Pomeranz provides attendees with a “new set of eyes” that hones their vision to recognize aspects of the environment undermining the quality of life for those individuals they support. Tom provides attendees the tools that actualize the Maxim “when you change the way in which you see things, the things you see will change.” The session’s content is driven home by numerous photos dramatically revealing conditions that exacerbate the challenges for individuals with a disability.

These current photos depicting issues of: invasion of right to privacy, damaged and dangerous adaptive equipment, unsanitary living conditions, inaccessible environments, age - inappropriate activities for adults, dangerous and hazardous situations and many more revealing issues that bring home the point that sometimes we simply “do not see it” and therefore fail to recognize the negative impact on those people we support.

Tom will discuss this impact that these situations have on the people we support. In addition he will discuss how we can change environments, actions and behavior to insure that those we support are above all else free from harm and afforded the opportunity to lead meaningful and respected lives as we wish and demand for ourselves.

  • As a new employee this is all very useful as I begin my new leadership role.
  • I will use this daily in my work to “retrain my eyes“ as well as train my staff to better notice their surroundings.
